Sant 'Antioco and surroundings

A LAND TO DISCOVER

In the south west of Sardinia, the largest of the Sardinian islands stands out, Sant’Antioco. Reachable by car thanks to the isthmus that crosses the Santa Caterina lagoon and connects it to Sardinia, the island of Sant’Antioco houses the homonymous municipality and that of Calasetta. Two centers of completely different origins, which for this very reason have their own history, traditions, language and culture to be known and appreciated.

HISTORY

a past that you don't expect

Sant’Antioco, from the historical point of view, can count on a rich archaeological heritage. The Phoenicians founded the city of Sulki, a reference point for trade in the Mediterranean. Here the tofet was built, a typical Phoenician sanctuary, where the children found a suitable rest, and which was then maintained during the Punic colonization. It is precisely the Punic necropolis that still occupies the entire hill where the Basilica of Sant’Antioco stands. Finds and objects belonging to the civilizations passing through the island are preserved and can be admired in the Ferruccio Barreca Archaeological Museum. And if archeology and history fascinate you, then our advice is to visit the ancient sanctuary of sant’Antioco Martire, the tombs of the giants on Niu and su Crobu and the menhirs of sa Mongia and on Para.
